This can be done in person or over the phone, which may be done quickly or by an appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An initial <a href=\"\/myvoice\/glossary\/#letter-i\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>investigation<\/strong><\/a> is merely a gathering of facts. The police will want to know your contact details, when and where and what happened in the incident. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may want to know if there are any witnesses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know the person who committed the crime? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you describe the offender (s)? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>The initial investigation may involve:<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The police taking a formal statement from you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtaining medical evidence (Only with your express permission)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locating and speaking to potential witnesses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking formal statements from witnesses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtaining and examining forensic evidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtaining and examining CCTV<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle ownership enquiries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formal identification procedures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The police should issue you with a crime reference number within 36 hours of the initial investigation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What happens after the initial investigation?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the police have gathered all of the initial facts, a decision will then be made whether to transfer the crime to an <a href=\"\/myvoice\/glossary\/#letter-i\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>investigating officer<\/strong><\/a> for further investigation or not. This assessment will take into account the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seriousness of the offence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likelihood of solvability (e.g. availability of evidence)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Level of resources required proportionate to the seriousness of the offence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will then receive a letter, phone call or email notifying you of the result of the assessment. There are two possible outcomes at this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Investigation will be closed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; this means that there are currently no strong leads to pursue. Should the police receive further intelligence or discover new evidence, which it regularly does, the investigation could be re-opened and you will be contacted. Regardless of whether this happens, the information that you have provided will help police resources to detect and prevent crime in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/span><div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><strong>Why is my crime not being investigated?<\/strong><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\">If the Police have no further lines of enquiry to identify an Offender, the Crime may then be filed as \u2018Investigation Completed\u2019. You will be notified once this occurs and should be given an explanation as to why by the Investigating Officer. Remember this may not be the end, further information or evidence may be found that then will cause the Investigation to be re-opened and further enquiries made. Further information can be found here \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/470947\/victims-of-crime-leaflet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Information for Victims of Crime<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/476900\/code-of-practice-for-victims-of-crime.PDF\" target=\"_blank\">Codes of Practice for Victims of Crime.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0You will be referred to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voicenorthants.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Voice<\/a><\/strong>, unless you specifically state that you do not wish to be referred.<\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div><\/li>\n<li><b>Crime allocated for further investigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 an investigating officer is assigned and he\/she will be responsible for investigating the crime for you. This officer will be able to provide you with specific updates regarding the progress in the case.
