You may also be feeling upset, knowing what has happened to\u00a0someone you care about.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What you can do<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Believe them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Spend time with them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Listen attentively<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tell them you\u2019re sorry to hear about the event, and that you want to help them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Help them feel safe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Help them with everyday tasks, like cleaning, cooking or childcare to give them some private time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Things to remember<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions and to explore the issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t take angry outbursts personally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t say things like \u2018lucky it wasn\u2019t worse\u2019 or \u2018just get on with your life\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t say things that imply it was their fault, for example \u2018what were you doing there at that time anyway?\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t be impatient with them \u2013 people recover at different rates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you feel that you need support, contact Voice on 0300 303 1965. We can give you advice and contacts for local\u00a0<a href=\"\/myvoice\/support-and-services\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>support services<\/strong><\/a> in Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Supporting children<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Children who have experienced crime and trauma \u2013 especially very young children \u2013 may react by behaving differently.<\/p>\n<p>If your child has been through a traumatic event, they might:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feel confused or worried, of blame themselves for what happened<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sad, angry, irritable, guilty or ashamed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Act out, disobey rules, cling to you or avoid other people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Suddenly not be able to the things they could do before the traumatic event, for example, use the toilet or get themselves dressed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Show physical signs, for example, have headaches or stomach aches or startle easily<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have problems sleeping or concentrating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How you can help a child<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>You can help by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Giving honest, simple and brief answers to their questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing your child to express their feelings and reactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Reassuring them that they are still loved and will be cared for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Being patient if your child\u2019s behaviour regresses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping family routines and making things as normal as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Expressing your own fears honestly \u2013 admitting your fears and showing that you can handle them sends the message that they can overcome their fears too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Informing your child\u2019s school or day-care so they are prepared for any behavioural changes or changes in grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Accepting and allowing increased dependence \u2013 give more hugs if your child needs them and sit with them longer when they go to bed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Being a parent in the way you normally would \u2013 children still need boundaries and this helps them feel safe and secure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Getting support for a child<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After a crime or traumatic event, your child might need support. You can talk to your doctor about this.
