{"id":306,"date":"2016-09-08T10:54:06","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T09:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voicenorthants.local\/myvoice\/?page_id=306"},"modified":"2016-11-22T12:01:12","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T12:01:12","slug":"covering-tracks-online","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.voicenorthants.org\/myvoice\/covering-tracks-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Covering your tracks online"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Tips for hiding records of your internet viewing history<\/h2>\n<p>The safest way to browse a\u00a0site and keep your browsing history secure is by making sure no one has access to it, although\u00a0we understand this isn\u2019t always possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you share\u00a0a computer and are\u00a0worried about someone seeing you view this site, you can quickly hide it by clicking on the <strong>&#8216;Quick Exit&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0button present across all pages- it will take you to the ITV Hub\u00a0homepage.<\/p>\n<h2>Deleting your browsing history \u2013 what you need to know<\/h2>\n<p>Removing data from your device (laptop, phone etc) may be noticed by the person or people you want to cover your tracks from. If you\u00a0share\u00a0a device with others, then deleting your browsing history and cookies means that saved information\u00a0such as passwords for online accounts will be lost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anyone you share a\u00a0device with may notice that previously saved information\u00a0such as passwords and other website address history have disappeared.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Browsing privately<\/h2>\n<p>Most browsers have a\u00a0\u2018Private\u2019 or \u2018Incognito\u2019 browsing option which\u00a0allows you to browse the internet without information such as cookies, search or browsing history being stored.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that any files you download or bookmarks\/favourites you create will be saved. Don\u2019t forget to close the tab when you have finished.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>If someone knows how to read your computer&#8217;s history or cache file (automatically saved web pages) they can see what you have been viewing\u00a0on the internet. The best way to hide what you have been looking\u00a0at is to clear your history and your cache file.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To find out how to clear your history, just find\u00a0your web browser in the list below and follow the instructions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You may also want to read the tips for securing your email account and Facebook privacy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>Microsoft Internet Explorer<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"AccordeonContent\">\n<p>Find\u00a0the <strong>Tools<\/strong> option in the browser\u2019s menu bar &#8211; this menu may be hidden by default; if it is,\u00a0press the <strong>Alt<\/strong> key on the keyboard which will\u00a0display the menu and then select\u00a0<strong>Internet Options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>General<\/strong> page (usually the first page) under <strong>Browsing History<\/strong>, click <strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure the <strong>Temporary Internet<\/strong> files, <strong>Cookies<\/strong> and <strong>History<\/strong> checkboxes are all ticked then click\u00a0<strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Private Browsing for Internet Explorer 8 or 9<\/h4>\n<p>For extra security, you can use<strong> Internet Explorer&#8217;s InPrivate Browsing<\/strong> before viewing a website which means\u00a0that the browser will not remember anything you do from the point you start using it until you close the browser.<\/p>\n<p>To use InPrivate browsing\u00a0go\u00a0to the <strong>Safety<\/strong> dropdown menu (in version 9) or the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu (in version 8) and selecting <strong>InPrivate Browsing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Additional option for Internet Explorer 9<\/p>\n<p>You can also access the <strong>Safety<\/strong> menu by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the window, then select <strong>Safety<\/strong> and click <strong>Delete browsing history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>Google Chrome<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Click the spanner icon in the browser toolbar<\/strong> and select\u00a0<strong>Tools<\/strong> and then\u00a0<strong>Clear browsing data<\/strong>.\u00a0 In the dialogue box that appears, select the <strong>Clear browsing history<\/strong> checkbox.<\/p>\n<p>Select <strong>beginning of time<\/strong> to clear your entire browsing history,\u00a0click\u00a0<strong>Clear browsing data<\/strong> and then in the drop down box select <strong>Clear browsing history<\/strong>, <strong>Clear download history<\/strong>, <strong>Empty the cache<\/strong>, <strong>Delete cookies and other site data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"AccordeonContent\"><\/div>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>Firefox<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Before visiting a website, use Firefox&#8217;s Private Browsing<\/strong> (similar to Internet Explorer\u2019s InPrivate Browsing, see above for details) which tells the browser not to remember anything you do from that point until you close the browser. This can be accessed by going to the <strong>Tools menu<\/strong> and selecting <strong>Start Private Browsing<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you have already started browsing, you can clear your history if you:<\/p>\n<p>Go to the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu,\u00a0select <strong>Clear Recent History <\/strong>then under <strong>Time Range to Clear <\/strong>select<strong> Everything.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Make sure all checkbox items that\u00a0appear in the <strong>Details<\/strong> area are ticked and click\u00a0<strong>Clear Now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>Safari<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<p>Click the<strong> Settings<\/strong> button in the upper-right corner of the browser window and select <strong>Reset Safari\u00a0<\/strong>from the drop-down list; from here you can clear, delete or reset a lot of the website information that Safari stores.<\/p>\n<p>Click your cursor\u00a0in the box next to the items in the menu you want to delete, clear or reset and click\u00a0the <strong>Reset<\/strong> button when you are finished.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>E-Mail<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<p>You can help to keep your e-mail private by setting up a password so anyone who wants to read the e-mails will have to log in.\u00a0 When you choose a password,\u00a0make sure it is not one that can be easily guessed, such as your birthday or the name of a shared pet.<\/p>\n<p>When you are setting up a log in or using your account, make sure you <strong>do not select the Save my password or Keep me logged in options<\/strong> (not having these options selected prevents people from accessing your e-mail using auto-logins) and <strong>remember\u00a0to\u00a0log out of your e-mail accounts<\/strong> when you have finished your session.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone sends you threatening or harassing e-mail messages, these messages may constitute a criminal offence and you should\u00a0print and save the e-mails as evidence of the\u00a0offence. For more information, contact the Police.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"omsc-accordion\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"omsc-toggle\"><div class=\"omsc-toggle-title\"><b>Facebook<\/b><\/div><div class=\"omsc-toggle-inner\"><\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways to help protect your privacy on Facebook, according to the unofficial Facebook blog.<\/p>\n<p>Remove yourself from Facebook searches &#8211; By default, Facebook makes your account visible to the network you are in. Often people are not aware of their own visibility, so this is one of the first settings which should be changed. Go to the <strong>Privacy Settings<\/strong> page on your Facebook account to change this.<\/p>\n<p>Remove your Facebook profile from Google and other search engines &#8211; to do this, go to the <strong>Privacy Settings<\/strong> page on your Facebook account.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid the photo\/video tag mistake &#8211; to avoid getting your name next to embarrassing photos, go to your <strong>Profile Privacy<\/strong> page, select the setting next to <strong>Photos Tagged of You<\/strong> and select the option which says <strong>Customise<\/strong> to change this.<\/p>\n<p>Protect your Facebook photo albums &#8211; go to your <strong>Photos Privacy<\/strong> page to set the visibility of each of your albums.<\/p>\n<p>Use your friend lists to create private groupings of friends based on your personal preferences.<\/p>\n<p>When changes are made to your Basic Information (including\u00a0things like your relationship status), it automatically appears as a news feed &#8211; to make these changes private, go to <strong>Basic Information<\/strong> on the <strong>Profile Privacy<\/strong> page.<\/p>\n<p>Once you install an application on Facebook, you should check your profile to ensure no embarrassing notification has been posted to your profile.<\/p>\n<p>Make your Contact Information private. If you have chosen to enter this information on your profile, you should see a Contact Information area under the Info tab. Simply click Edit to modify the privacy setting.<\/p>\n<p>Within your profile page, you can control who can view wall postings made by your friends. Click on the Settings icon on the wall in your profile page.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your friendships private.
