Issues like debt, housing disputes and bankruptcy are called civil cases. You might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-if-civil-legal-advice-can-help-you\" rel=\"external\">get help from Civil Legal Advice<\/a>\u00a0if you qualify for legal aid.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><a name=\"criminal-justice-system\"><\/a>Criminal Justice System<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">The organisations that work together to keep people safe. They include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.police.uk\/\" rel=\"external\">police<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/open.justice.gov.uk\/how-it-works\/courts\/\" rel=\"external\">courts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cps.gov.uk\/\" rel=\"external\">Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ministry-of-justice\/about\" rel=\"external\">Ministry of Justice<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><a name=\"crown-court\"><\/a>Crown Court<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">This court usually deals with the most serious crimes. It normally has a jury who decides if a suspect is guilty. And a judge who decides on the sentence given. You can call them on 101. When you report the crime you&#8217;ll be given a crime reference number. You&#8217;ll need this number to be put through to the right person.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><a name=\"investigation\"><\/a>Investigation<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">When the police take witness statements and gather evidence to try and establish the facts of a crime and charge a suspect.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h2 class=\"LetterNavigation-letter\"><a name=\"letter-l\"><\/a>l<a class=\"LetterNavigation-topLink\" href=\"#alphabet\">back to top<\/a><\/h2>\n<dl class=\"DefinitionList\">\n<dt><a name=\"licence-conditions\"><\/a>Licence conditions<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">When an offender is released from prison to serve the rest of their sentence in the community they are \u2018on licence\u2019. They must follow certain rules, eg staying in touch with their probation officer.<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h2 class=\"LetterNavigation-letter\"><a name=\"letter-m\"><\/a>m<a class=\"LetterNavigation-topLink\" href=\"#alphabet\">back to top<\/a><\/h2>\n<dl class=\"DefinitionList\">\n<dt><a name=\"magistrates-court\"><\/a>Magistrates&#8217; court<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">This court hears most criminal cases except the most serious. Decisions are made by a district judge or 2 or 3 voluntary magistrates. There&#8217;s no jury. They keep you updated about key stages or events in the offender&#8217;s sentence. They can also\u00a0make sure your views are shared with the prison or Parole Board when release is being considered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><a name=\"victim-personal-statement\"><\/a>Victim Personal Statement<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">Your chance to describe how the crime has affected you. You can ask to read it aloud in court, or have it read out for you.
