What is discrimination?<\/h2>\n

Discrimination is when someone treats you differently because of who you are, such as for your culture, views or opinions.\u00a0It is against the law to discriminate against and everyone should be treated equally and fairly.<\/p>\n

Common reasons that people experience discrimination for are race, sexuality, gender or religion. Discrimination, racism and hate crime are often confused.<\/p>\n

Discrimination<\/strong> is when someone is treated differently or bullied<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>because of something about them.<\/p>\n

Racism<\/strong> is when people are treated differently, abused or discriminated against because of their race.<\/p>\n

Hate Crime<\/strong> is any crime that is committed against someone caused because of prejudice or discrimination.<\/p>\n

What is the difference between discrimination and bullying?<\/h2>\n
\n

Discrimination<\/strong> and bullying<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>can be very similar. For example, if someone singles you out because of your skin or hair colour.<\/p>\n

But bullying is different from discrimination, as it can happen for no reason at all. Someone who bullies might do so because they\u2019re jealous of the person or dislikes them. Sometimes people bully others just because they feel like it.<\/p>\n

Discrimination happens because someone doesn\u2019t like something about another person. Sometimes people discriminate without realising what they’re doing.\u00a0But whether it’s done on purpose or not, discrimination is illegal.<\/p>\n

Discrimination comes from\u00a0prejudice<\/strong>.\u00a0Prejudice is having an opinion about a group of people, with no reason\u00a0to do so. Discrimination happens when you treat another person unfairly because there is something different about them.\u00a0It is never ok to discriminate \u2013 and it is against the law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I am being discriminated against or Hate Crime has happened to me. What can I do?<\/h2>\n
\n

The first thing you need to do is make sure you\u2019re safe. Tell an adult you trust, a teacher or a member of college staff, talk\u00a0to us at Voice<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or tell the police<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Discrimination and Hate Crime can leave you feeling like others don\u2019t understand you. You may feel alone\u00a0or scared. But you don\u2019t have to put up with it.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re being discriminated against, or have had Hate Crime happen to you, make sure you:<\/p>\n

\u2022 keep a diary of what\u2019s happening. You can use this as evidence;
\n\u2022 tell an adult\u00a0you trust about how you’re being treated. They\u2019ll be able to give you help and advice;
\n\u2022 If you\u2019re being discriminated against at school, tell your teachers. If this is at work, tell your employer. They should support you and should do something about it;
\n\u2022 talk to Voice. We\u2019ll be able to listen and help you decide how to make it stop; or
\n\u2022 report it to the police. Discrimination and Hate Crime are illegal, and the police will help you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019m being discriminated against at work. What can I do?<\/h2>\n
\n

There are three things you can do if you\u2019re being discriminated against at work:<\/p>\n

\u2022 complain informally to your employer;
\n\u2022 raise a grievance using your employer\u2019s grievance procedures; and
\n\u2022 make a claim to the Employment Tribunal.<\/p>\n

You do not have to choose only one of these three, you can try them all in turn. If you can\u2019t get your employer to put things right, you can make a claim to an industrial tribunal.<\/p>\n

What can I do about Hate Crime at school?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re experiencing this type of bullying, the school should deal with it under their\u00a0behaviour policy. This may include involving the police if the incident is serious.<\/p>\n

Make sure you tell your teacher or another member of the school staff.
